Steps Required for Life & Health License:

  • ✅ Complete your Pre-licensing Education requirements (Xcel Solutions)

  • ✅ Pass your state **LIFE ONLY agent exam

  • ✅ Complete LiveScan Fingerprint Scanning (Felony/Background Check)

  • ✅ Apply for National Producer Number (NPN)

    *Errors and omissions (E&O) insurance is required.

(Estimated cost to obtain your license: Approx. $150-$350, depending on your home state costs.) *Remember, every licensed agent must undergo this process.

STEP 1: Register for a Test Date

STEP 2: Finish Study Course

      • Your course expires 30 days after enrollment. STUDY with a purpose.

      • You will be responsible for the $39 extension costs if you don’t finish within 30 days; All Serious Agents should finish their studies with ample time left.

Life Insurance Agent Study

  • Get through the chapters and definitions quickly at first. Complete all chapter quizzes (don’t worry too much about your quiz scores at first). 

  • Once you get through all the material, Take the practice exams over and over again! Shoot for an 85% to feel comfortable on the real test.

  • A LOT of the questions are found on the real test!

  • Keep retaking the FINAL mock exam OVER AND OVER AND OVER to see different variations of questions and test examples.

  • Complete All Required Hours in each subject (Required study hours vary per state).

  • Focus on the definitions and subjects you were unaware of prior to studying.

  • The majority of the test is common sense and ethical reasoning.

  • You are studying to pass the test, not how to sell insurance. (We will teach you how to sell insurance after you get your license.)

  • After completing your courses, print out or save your certificate to present to the testing center.

**Remember: It is in your best interest to take and pass your test within the first 14 days of receiving your pre-licensing to receive an additional 5% INSTANT increase (STARTING 85%) in commission! Take Advantage!

STEP 3: Pass Your Exam, & get fingerprints

✅​ After passing the test, get fingerprints/background check via “LiveScan” done

  • Cost: up to $40. Some test centers offer fingerprinting in-house after taking the test.

  • Information needed from LiveScan is found on the paper and/or email sent to you (after you pass, they send you a sheet with your test scores on it).

  • Google “Live Scan Fingerprinting Services” or call & ask your state’s Department of Insurance to find a location if your testing center doesn’t offer to fingerprint.

 Step 4: Register for your

National Producer Number (NPN)

** Please wait 24 hours AFTER passing the test to register for your license. The system needs 24 hours to find your test results in the registry.

✅​ AFTER FINGERPRINTS, REGISTER FOR YOUR STATE LICENSE!  HERE

  • Instructions on registering for your National Producer Number will be found on the paper or email your recieved from the Testing Department after passing the test.

  • You DON’T have to wait for a fingerprint/background check. As soon as you pass the test, find a location to get it done!

  • Bring your exam receipt to the LiveScan location, and they will know what to do from there.

  • YOU MUST complete the Test and Fingerprints before registering for your license.

  • Call your state’s Department of Insurance if unclear​ (Registration instructions and Phone # found on paper/email received after passing the test)


✅​ After Submission- Check On National Producer Number & State License Status

  • After 5 business days, we recommend calling your state’s Department of Insurance DAILY to check on your Life Insurance License’s progress.

  • Being consistent will help expedite the process to your NPN (speaking from experience).
